Dusza
(sems) według nauk buddyjskich jest istotą
nie tylko rozumną, myślącą, ale i czującą. Krótko można by
więc powiedzieć, że jest to istota zdolna do czucia i rozumienia.
Według zwyczaju buddyjskiego jest ona równoznaczna z umysłem
(yid) i doznaniem
(rnam shes). Doznanie oznacza tutaj
postrzeganie zmysłowe i umysłowe. Dzieli się ono zwykle na
doznanie oczu, uszu, nosa, języka, ciała i umysłu. Jest więc dusza
umysłowa, ale i zmysłowa. Podaje się takie jej określenie:
„samodzielna świadomość istoty znaczenia” (don gyi ngo bo rang
stobs kyi rig pa). Tybetańczycy mówiąc sem
(sems), wskazują ręką na serce, a nie na
głowę, jak by to było w przypadku umysłu.
Zdania
ze Słońca łaski macierzyństwa (ma rgyud
thugs rje nyi ma) uwydatniają pewną różnicę
między duszą (sems) a poznaniem (ye shes):
„Dusza
jest sądząca, a poznanie niesądzące.
Miejscem
duszy jest serce, a poznanie mieści się w rdzeniu.
Dusza
zawsze postrzega postrzeżenia, a poznanie oświeca.
Siła duszy
poczyna pięć dziedzictw (rodzajów?),1
a siła poznania – pięć rodzin (gatunków?).2
Dusza się
porusza, a poznanie jest wolne od ruchu.
Dusza się
martwi, a poznanie pojawia się w postaci wcielenia”.

Nazwą
dla osoby uduchowionej jest sempa (sems dpa'),
co można przełożyć jako bohater, wybawca
albo odważna
dusza, mężna dusza. Sam człon pa (dpa')
oznacza odważnego albo
mężnego. W
wyrażeniach pało (dpa' bo) i
pamo (dpa' mo) nabiera
on szczególnego znaczenia męża-wojownika i
mężyny-wojowniczki. Sam
wyraz sempa występuje
często jako człon wyrazu ciankciup sempa
(byang chub sems dpa'), czyli rozumny
wybawca albo oświecony
wybawca (bodhisattwa),
łącząc w ten sposób dwie własności rozumności i czułości.
Wybawca to ten, który poświęca siebie na rzecz innych, działając
z miłości (czułość) dla słusznej sprawy (rozumność). To
poświęcenie często oznacza śmierć. Z tego powodu wyraz sempa
może być też przyrównany do męczennika.
Wielu buddystów na przykład powszechnie
uznaje za bodhisattwów Pana Jezusa albo Mahatmę Gandhiego.
2 Postacie (boskie) – 1: zwycięzcy albo szczęśliwi – znak godła; 2: mniejsi panowie – znak krzyża albo pioruna; 3: plebs – znak klejnotu; 4: kapłani – znak lilii; 5: wyrzutki – znak koła albo kratki.
